About This Item
London: J Bettenham, 1737. Leather. Very Good. 8" by 5". None. The seventh volume of Robert Moss's influential sermons. Containing sixteen sermons on various religious and moral subjects. Robert Moss (c.16661729) was the dean of Ely and 'preacher to the honourable society of Gray's-Inn'. Moss was an able preacher. Andrew Snape, who edited his sermons and wrote a brief memoir, noted that when Moss preached at Great St Mary's, the church was always full (Moss, x). Moss was a high-churchman and a tory, and was known to frequent the tory October Club. In December 1709 he refused to preach on the thanksgiving day as a protest against the treatment received by Henry Sacheverell, following his inflammatory sermon at St Paul's Cathedral (Remarks, 2.320). This support for Sacheverell continued through his trial, when Moss and a number of high-church divines wrote the speech given by Sacheverell to the court on 7 March 1710 (Oldmixon, 435). DNB In a full calf binding. Externally sound although rubbed. The rear joint is starting. Internally, fimly bound. Beautifully bright and clean, in remarkable condition for the age of this volume. Very Good
