About This Item

Reference Notes. Index. DJ has wear, soiling, edge tears and chips. Sticker residue on DJ front flap. Nice inscription by the author, on the fep, to Letitia Baldridge (misspelled last name), dated October 16, 1968. Letitia "Tish" Baldrige (February 9, 1926 - October 29, 2012) was most famous for serving as Jacqueline Kennedy's Social Secretary. Vance Oakley Packard (May 22, 1914 - December 12, 1996) was an American journalist and social critic. He was the author of several books. In 1942, joined the staff of The American Magazine. Packard became a writer at Collier's, then, after its closing, devoted his full attention to developing book-length projects of his own. Halfway into the next year, his The Hidden Persuaders was published to national attention, launching him into a career as a full-time social critic, lecturer and developing further books. He was a critic of consumerism, which he viewed as an attack on the traditional American way of life. Derived from a Kirkus review: This is the most successful book Packard has done. Packard has spent four years on this study and it is data-tabulated, pollster-bolstered, factually supported where possible. Mr. Packard made his own study (six countries; twenty-six college campuses) and this College Survey provides newer evidence on the changing egalitarian, younger lifestyles. What becomes apparent is an acceleration in the slackening of sexual restraints. Packard goes into the liberating influences (stimuli of books/films; the pill; etc.) the current attitudes on premarital sex; male-female differences (we need males and females to be equal but complementary); the new woman and man's adaptation to her; along with a great many other aspects of sexual strictures versus laissez faire with a final attempt at establishing some normative ground rules. This work is an attempt to evaluate the scene for those who are bewildered, concerned or alarmed.
