About This Item

[London]: Printed by Order of the Masters of the Bench of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, [1902]. [Trial] FIRST EDITION, privately printed. Octavo (26 x 20cm), pp.viii [2] 88 [2] lxxxii (i.e. 73). With an appendix of numerous reproductions such as title pages of plays and literary extracts. With the original cover bound in at rear. Near contemporary red half-morocco, green cloth over sides. Gilt titles and raised bands to spine. Top edge gilt, the others untrimmed. Grey endpapers. Lightly spotted throughout. Some creasing to front flyleaf near hinge, perhaps result of water. Small binder's label rubbed off to front paste-down. Some dulling to t.e.g. Spine sunned to brown, joints rubbed. Moderate edgewear. Very good. A fascinating document; here Willis presents a fictitious trial surrounding mostly 19th century claims that Francis Bacon was the true author of the plays released in the First Folio (1623). Willis writes that he was first inspired by R.M. Theobald's 'Shakespeare Studies in Baconian Light,' and places his imaginary trial in 1627 (after both Shakespeare and Bacon had died); he even interjects the proceedings with the jury's reactions and laughter - giving his work its own dramatic flair.
