About This Item
San Mateo, CA: Matthews Northrup Co., Buffalo, Lithographers, 1887. First Edition. Softcover. Good. 8.5" x 7", [484] pp, in illustrated linen-backed paper wrappers. Contents very good, but with considerable soiling to rear wrapper, so only good overall. An uncommon and beautifully illustrated (by the author) promotional work on the attractions of Mount Shasta and the surrounding area, including much of western Oregon. Places described and illustrated include the Castle Rocks, Mossbrae Falls, the Sacramento River, Lower and Upper Soda Springs, the Rogue River Valley, Crater Lake, and Mount Hood. Also has sections on fishing on the McCloud River, the pines of Northern California, topological features of Mount Shasta, large and small game, and several charming pictorial maps. Johnstone was also the creator of the wonderful "Unique Map of California," published in 1888. A second edition of this volume was published in 1889.
