New York: Brentano's, 1928. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/Good. New York: Brentano's, 1928. First Edition, First Printing with correct publisher imprint, 1928 date on title page, no later printings noted, correct dust jacket blurbs, and correct $2.50 price. Good+ in Good+ Dust Jacket. Good binding; clean pages; contemporary owner's name (Marion R. Powell--maybe a relative of Dawn but we couldn't verify) and date (1928) on front endpaper; moderate wear and soiling to covers; dust jacket is moderately worn, with not too much loss at corners; spine a bit darkened; light soiling; price not clipped ($2.50). Most booksellers would grade this at least Very Good/Very Good but we like to grade conservatively. Not the absolute best example you would wish to find, but fairly nice for a book you may not see again for 20 years.~~~~~~~~~~~She Walks In Beauty [was] published by Brentano's in 1928 (after more than two dozen rejections), to generally favorable reviews and unremarkable sales. Throughout her life, Powell would disavow her first book, Whither, and would claim that She Walks in Beauty was her first work. Exceptionally scarce. None in dust jacket at auction in the last 100 years. We've never seen a copy on the market. Apparently printed very small quantities. CHECK OUT OUR OTHER RARE AND COLLECTIBLE BOOKS.

Scarce. Likely one of just a few published copies of the British edition in existence. Hardcover Near Fine. No DJ. First edition of author's first book. Banned very shortly after publication. Suppressed in England on March 4, 1929. As a result, there is likely only a handful of copies remaining. In fact, the copy in the British Library is one of the 'French' copies published subsequent to the English copies. Sleeveless Errand was ruled obscene at the Bow Street Police Court. All but a few representative copies were ordered to be destroyed. The police had been tipped off about the content by the editor of the Morning Post after they had received a review copy. It was subsequently printed in Paris the same year by Jack Kahane's Obelisk Press. According to one publication, "Sleeveless Errand was probably the most suppressed novel ever published in England; every store containing copies was raided; and a guard stood for a week-end at the window of one store containing one copy, until the owner could be… Read More

Description:
New York: Brentano's. Very Good+. 1928. 2nd printing. Hardcover. (yellow decorated cloth; no dust jacket) [spine very slightly turned, minor shelfwear to bottom edges, a bit of dust-soiling to top edges of covers and text block, a little darkening to spine cloth]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the ffep: "To Harold Swanson -- / You don't have to / read this but / honestly you ought to / have it around if / only to throw at / contributors. / Sincerely / Dawn Powell / March 30, 1928." The great American author's "first" novel. (At least that's what she called it herself, preferring not to mention her ACTUAL first novel, "Whither," published three years earlier. Hey, even the great ones are entitled to a mulligan, right?) Inscribed copies of Powell's novels are uncommon, and this is also a terrific association copy: the inscribee, later to set up shop as "H.N. Swanson" in Hollywood, where he was the most successful… Read More

Description:
New York: Brentano's, 1928. Hardcover. Very Good. Third printing, the month after the first. Contemporary ownership signature of Toledo, Ohio native Mary Lucille Buskey, slight wear at the spine ends, very good plus lacking the dustwrapper. Additionally Signed by Dawn Powell, presumably at a contemporary date: "Sincerely, Dawn Powell". A pleasing copy of the author's exceptionally uncommon second book (and in practice the first, after she repudiated her first novel *Whither*), a novel set in the Midwest of Sinclair Lewis, Sherwood Anderson and Edgar Lee Masters, but wittier and more ironic. Powell was prolific and well-regarded but until a fairly recent and well-deserved revival, precipitated by the Tim Page biography, mostly forgotten. For forty years she was an ornament of the New York literary world and if you read her books it's easy to see why.

New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Description:
New York: Random House, 1959. Book. Illus. by Sam March (dust jacket design). Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition.. Small octavo. Humes's second novel, following 'The Underground City,' both of which led to his being considered by Esquire magazine as having the same promise as two obscure guys named Updike and Styron (whoever they are). Anyway, he met a guy named Leary who introduced him to a little substance known as LSD, and after seriously indulging his fondness for the hallucinogen he became a trifle paranoid and a bit delusional, which pretty much ended his writing career. Humes was co-founder (with Peter Matthiessen and George Plimpton) of The Paris Review. He died of prostate cancer in 1992. Black cloth w/gilt lettering, 184 pages. Mildly cocked, light general wear, in price-clipped dust jacket w/light rubbing, light edgewear, creases to fore-edges of both flaps..
