"Sherman and His Campaigns: A Military Biography" by Col. Samuel Millard Bowman and Lt.-Col. Richard Biddle Irwin is a meticulously detailed account of the military endeavors of Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman during the U.S. Civil War. Presenting a well-rounded view of Sherman's life, the authors delve into his strategic genius, innovative command style, and decisive campaigns that earned him recognition as the "first modern general" by esteemed historian B.H. Liddell Hart.
The authors go beyond narrating Sherman's military successes; they intricately explore his character, shedding light on his leadership style and the respect he commanded from his soldiers. Capt. Bradford F. Thompson of the 112th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. In 1885, Thompson completed and published a detailed account of the regiment's service, which his fellow soldiers lauded as being both impressively accurate and comprehensive. A large part of the 112th's service was given to the Atlanta Campaign led by General Sherman, the success of which paved the way for Sherman's March to the Sea and hastening the end of the war. Many of the maps in this volume of Sherman and His Campaigns are dedicated to battles fought during this campaign.
