About This Item

New York: S. S. McClure, 1895. Leather. Very Good. 6.5" by 7". Not Stated. A nicely bound and profusely illustrated biography of Napoleon Bonaparte, written by Ida M. Turbell, held in a slipcase. With a slipcase. Slipcase in a fine condition. An interesting biography of Napoleon Bonaparte, the French military leader and Emperor. Bonaparte"s name has become something of a legend throughout history, after he rose to prominence during the French Revolution, becoming the emperor of France in 1804 after the fall of the French monarchy in 1792 - 1793. This biography details his life, both personal and professional, from his youth in the La Fere regiment, to his rise to Emperor, to his death in exile. The biography also looks at his marriage and divorce to Josephine, and his ironic proxy marriage to Marie Louise, the great niece of the former Queen of France Marie Antoinette. Written by Ida M. Tarbell. Tarbell was a writer and journalist who pioneered investigative journalism. With a frontispiece and numerous in-text illustrations throughout. With a pamphlet loosely inserted 'Centenary of the Death of Napoleon', with an ink inscription 'With the compliments of Bradford(?) Adam Smith'. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards, held in a slipcase. Externally, smart. Some light discolouration to the boards. Front hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd spot. Tape repairs to the title page, and page v/vi. Slipcase in a fine condition. Very Good
