The first US edition of this evocative novel by influential modern novelist, Elio Vittorini, with a foreword by Ernest Hemingway. The first US edition of this work. This was also the first edition to have an introduction by Ernest Hermingway, with the American writer stating Vittorini to be "one of the very best of the new Italian writers".Originally published under the name 'Conversazione in Sicilia' (Conversations in Italy), this novel follows the protagonist Silvestro and his return to Sicily where he grew up, after not having been since leaving at the age of 15.The author uses a blend of lyricism and realism, and the novel was met with intrigued critique of its assumed criticism of Fascist Italy and themes of social injustice.
