Seized by Brits 1795, handed back to Dutch 1803; Captured again 1806. 1814 becomes British naval base. 1898 Dockyard ceded to British Admiralty. Town layout 1904, naval base 1906 Simon's Town (Afrikaans: Simonstad), sometimes spelled Simonstown, named after Simon van der Stel, the first governor, is a town near Cape Town, South Africa.
