Description

Philadelphia: Printed For Robert Campbell, 1793., 1793. 2 Volumes in 1. 12mo. pp. 1 p.l., ii, 356. 19th century quarter calf (spine & edges worn & spine label wanting but binding sturdy, title leaf silked & with slight loss of margin at top & bottom, paper lightly embrowned). First American Edition (Evans’ reference to a 1792 edition based on a statement by the publisher appears to be unfounded). This "great romance" was the principal and most famous work of the English novelist, dramatist and actress. "It obtained an immediate success…it is a supremely tender and touching work, written with much happiness of style, and giving a very lively portraiture of character. It exercised a powerful influence; it was one of the earliest examples of the novel of passion, and seems to some extent to have inspired ‘Jane Eyre’."(DNB) Evans 25650. cfNCBEL II 843.. 1st Edition.
