About This Item
Toronto: Chatto & Windus., 1946. The setting of "Singing Waters" is in the high mountains of little known Albania. Miss Bridge, who knows her history as well as her geography, sketches in lightly a background of Albanian history and politics. We are shown the characteristics of the sturdy mountaineers, their customs, their habits, their generous hospitality, their blood feuds, their colorful costumes, etc., portrayed with the author's usual skill and warmth. The book is set, in time, in the days before Mussolini had decided to take the blessing of modern civilization to primitive Albania. This novel's characters centre around three remarkable women, Miss Glanfield, an English teacher, Dr. Crowninshield, a New Englander whose life had been spent in service amongst the Albanian people, and Mme. Lek-Gionaj, wife of the chieftain. A clean bright copy in an illustrated peice-intact dust jacket.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good.
