Introduction by Anita Brookner. First published in 1861, this is a novel about a nursing sister working in a hospital in nineteenth century Paris. Jules de Goncourt (1830-1870) and brother Edmond (1822-1896) wrote several novels, of which Sister Philomène was the first. Edmond went on to found the Academie Goncourt which still gives the most prestigious prize for literature in France, the Prix Goncourt. Black paper-covered boards with gilt spine lettering. Lightly soiled text block fore-edge, otherwise, a clean, sturdy volume. Dust jacket is lightly rubbed with a small drop of white paint on the back. .
