Elaine Goodale Eastman (1863 - 1953) went to Dakota Territory as a teacher to a tiny village in the Great Sioux Reservation. From there she wrote numerous accounts for eastern publications. This memoir was written in the 1930s, and is heavily based on those earlier articles. This edition, in which spelling, punctuation, capitalization have been modified, carries editorial footnotes as well. The original manuscript is preserved at Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts.
