The first edition of this delightful work from Scottish zoologist, physiologist and author Dr Andrew Wilson, compiled with the aim 'of affording general readers, and especially the young, some popular and yet trustworthy ideas regarding some of the most interesting groups of the animal world'.With a handwritten bookplate to the front free endpaper dedicating this work to Maggie McKinnon for 'general proficiency', 6th July 1900.With a charmingly illustrated title page, and numerous further vignette illustrations of both animals and microorganisms.With a thirty two page illustrated publisher's catalogue to the rear. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding, with gilt detailing. Boards are bright, with discolouration to back strip and bumping to spine head and tail. Prize bookplate to front pastedown, with offsetting to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean, with the odd handling mark. Very Good
