17 volumes with frontispieces, illustrations and indexes. Royal octavo (9 3/4"" x 6 1/2") bound in original publisher's light green cloth with labels to spine. and gilt head end pages with deckled edges. Bassorah edition, number 129 limited to 1000 copies.Burton's translation was one of two unabridged and unexpurgated English translations done in the 1880s; the first was by John Payne, under the title The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night (1882–1884, nine volumes). Burton's ten volume version was published almost immediately afterward with a slightly different title. This, along with the fact that Burton closely advised Payne and partially based his books on Payne's, led later to charges of plagiarism. Owing to the sexual imagery in the source texts (which Burton made a special study of, adding extensive footnotes and appendices on "Oriental" sexual mores) and to the strict Victorian laws on obscene material, both translations were printed as private editions for subscribers only, rather…

1850 Life of Jesus Christ Fleetwood Bible ART Miracles Jerusalem Holy Land"No event that ever did, or perhaps will happen, can more remarkably display the wisdom and power of the great Jehovah, than the glorious manner in which he brought life and immortality to light, by the gospel of his Son, manifested in the flesh."
– Fleetwood, Life of Jesus Christ
A rare early 19th-century example of John Fleetwood's famous book on the life of Jesus. This book uses biblical passages as a basis for this 'biography' of the life of Jesus Christ. Fleetwood covers the birth of Jesus, the angelic visitation to Mary, decree of taxation and the massacre of infants, Jesus's baptism, first miracles, temptation in the desert, calling of disciples, Jesus curing leprosy and palsy, and the trial, crucifixion, and resurrection.
Other important topics include:
·
Establishment and differences in sects of the Jews
·
Demolition of Temple of Jerusalem
·

Description:
1880 Spiritualism 1ed Immortality OCCULT Ghosts Evil Spirits Medium Heaven Hell"Immortality, and Our Employments Hereafter," by James Martin Peebles offers an interesting, 19th-century exploration into the mysteries of the afterlife. Drawing from his backgrounds as a physician and an active member of Psychic/Spiritualist communities, Peebles addresses pressing questions that have long occupied the human mind: What awaits us after death? Will we reunite with our loved ones? How do spirits occupy their time in the hereafter? The book claims to grant a platform for various spirits to share their accounts and experiences from different realms. It delves into the nature of life, death, and the eternal soul, examining the intricacies of existence both on Earth and in the spiritual world. Peebles presents these narratives, not just as testimonies, but also as a way to provide clarity and hope for readers yearning for insights about the great beyond. Amidst the accounts, Peebles also touches upon the eternal… Read More

One summer night in 1808, Sobran Jodeau sets out to drown his love sorrows in his family's vineyard. Drunk, he stumbles on an angel: "Someone had set a statue down on the ridge. Sobran blinked and swayed. For a second he saw what he knew--gilt, paint and varnish, the sculpted labial eye of a church statue. Then he swooned while still walking forward, and the angel stood quickly to catch him." Once he gets over his shock, Sobran decides that Xas, the male angel, is his guardian sent to counsel him on everything from marriage to wine production. But Xas turns out to be a far more…

Description:
v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
