Smyrne a une place particuliere dans la memoire collective. II est bon que des historiens se penchent sur ce passe souvent fantasme et encore cause d'enthousiasmes nostalgiques ou, et c'est pire, de rancoeurs mortiferes. Inversement, la turcite d'Izmir et la conviction que septembre 1922 fut une juste liberation sont bien ancrees dans le discours officiel du pays voisin. Smyrne s'est transformee d'echelle commerciale levantine sur une mer ottomane en une ville frontiere lors du recul territorial ottoman entame des la fin du XVIIe siecle. Enjeu de convoitises diverses, la grecque et la turque nationaliste n'etant que les plus legitimes, la ville est epargnee pendant le premier conflit mondial mais a la defaite de l'Empire ottoman, alors que les structures imperiales semblent devoir s'effacer, la Grece prend pied sur le continent asiatique et des membres de l'elite ottomane forment le mouvement national pour contrer la dislocation de ce qui reste de leur Etat. L'expansion grecque accorde quelques annees de repit a la Smyrne chretienne. La victoire turque de septembre 1922, aidee par la Russie bolchevique, l'Italie puis la France, pour les soutiens les plus visibles, evince la Grece qui s'est isolee sur le plan politique, diplomatique et qui n'a plus les moyens militaires pour assurer l'annexion de Smyrne. L'etude s'attache a montrer la multiplicite des etapes d'evolutions qui n'avaient rien d'ineluctables.
