Dust jacket is NOT PRICE CLIPPED, has a tiny bit of age darkening on some edges, has minor edge wear and a few chips, back cover of dj has a rip 2 1/4 inches long on left and right sides with an old crease mark joining the two, been restored flat for many years, dj back also has a diagonal crease 2 1/2 inches long at corner, paper is in place on half the length of the right side rip, so that if repaired the rip will be only 1 1/8 inch long, dj back also has a small piece missing out of the lower right corner. Calcutta: Printed by Order of the Trustees of the Indian Museum , 1902 First english edition - translated from the german by Robert Von Lendenfeld. Complete with 23 full page black and white plates. It looks to have been rebound in a good cloth binding fairly recently: the binding is in excellent condition with gilt titles to spine. Internally the endpapers are new. There is a small ink signature to the top of the title page but the contents are otherwise unmarked. There is a little brown spotting to title page and second 'note' page, but the remainder of the text and plates are clean and in very good condition. 113 pages plus plates (each with protective guard). An extremely scarce work.

In the original decorative cloth binding with a gilt mollusk on the front board. This book forms part of Lovell Reeve's Popular Natural History series, designed for young people with aim of giving them an insight into the natural world. The decorative cloth bindings are very distinctive as is the good quality of the illustrations - with many of the volumes having hand coloured plates. This copy has been expertly rebacked to preserve the original spine and endpapers. It is therefore sound and tight. The front board has a couple of small indentations to the edges and a bumped top corner. The spine is dulled. The endpapers have slight marking. 1933 Whittlesey House first edition. Henry Rusby was a well know botanist and participant in numerous expeditions to the Amazon and other tropical climes.Condition of the book is Very Good. The binding is straight and sound. Inside pages are complete and unmarked. The main condition issue is light soil to the exterior edges of the text block. The catalogue BM(NH) list only the 5th Cahier in 3rd edition; Not in Wood.--(Some scattered light foxing or brownings as usual for French books from this epoque; the Cahier V has a few pages with some light ink stains in the outer marging; lower corner of the rear side has a slight crack).

Typed and handwritten signed letter to "My dear Watson" dated 5th January 1934. 1pp. 20cm x 25cm. King's College Zoological Department headed watermarked notepaper. The advance copy of the book mentioned is Huxley's "Elements of Experimental Embryology" co-written with Gavin de Beer. "I have got a German refugee working here who is getting interesting results with Sabella". The German refugee was Fabius Gross (1906 – 1950) Hitler's Black Book entry: "Since 1934 – Researcher at King's College, London University. Speciality – genetics; experimental cytology; protozoology; experimental zoology." Gross and Huxley published 'Regeneration and reorganisation in Sabella' in 1935. The letter also mentions work with Alexander Wolsky and C. J. Bond.

Handwritten note in pencil to verso: "Touting for signatures for candidature for Roy Soc". Nominated for candidature many times from the 1920's, and failing each time, it was not until 1938 that Huxley was eventually admitted as a Fellow. The tone of the… Read More
