About This Item

Evansville, Indiana: The University of Evansville Press, 2016. T1 - A first edition (stated) hardcover book SIGNED by Midge Goldberg in very good condition in very good dust jacket that is mylar protected. Book has chipping and wear on the cover spine and gutter edges, dust jacket and book have some bumped corners, light discoloration and shelf wear. Recipient of the 2015 Richard Wilbur Award. 9.25"x6.25", 74 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. In her collection Snowman's Code, Midge Goldberg evokes the American northeast and connects those landscapes and senses to the human heart. With titles like "On Learning the Harvest Moon is an Optical Illusion," Goldberg walks on a tightrope, both disappointed at the very real facts she knows, and entranced by the possibility of what could be. The snow and ice in these poems are both treacherous and awe-inspiring; the characters are all multidimensional. As Dick Davis says, "what is most impressive is the poems' exacting, accurate realism, not least in those poems in which she shows us how elusively ungraspable the realities of our lives must often remain." Though her voice shines through, Goldberg never loses sight of the fact that all stories depend on both the storyteller and the audience: in fact, in "Telling," she weaves a narrative that explores the way stories and people change in our memories. "You can't remove the teller from the tale. / Each time it was retold, the story grew. / What really happened no one ever knew," she concedes, revealing the longing not only to be understood, but much more interesting, to understand the people and the world around her. With both wordplay and wit, Goldberg creates poems that are fun to read and echo in the reader's head long after the initial impact.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
