From the rear cover

"Holoman displays a virtuosic command of the orchestra's archives. The book makes sense of a voluminous and complex documentary record and succeeds in doing this with an engaging and often humorous prose style. Holoman moves effortlessly from shouting matches at committee meetings to balance sheets to broader questions of aesthetics, performance practice, and repertory with real verve and panache."--Steven Huebner, author of French Opera at the Fin De Sicle: Wagnerism, Nationalism, and Style
