London: Printed and sold by J. Phillips..., 1779. 8vo, pp. viii, 289 [290 adverts], contemporary sheepskin; front joint wormed and holding by one cord, top and base of spine chipped. With the ownership notation "Henry Owen's Bot. at London in 1811" in pencil and ink on the front paste-down end-paper and copious marginal notes in pencil in the same hand, with another leaf of notes in ink and pencil loosely inserted. Arscott (1676 - 1737) published parts one and two of this work in 1730 - 1731, and Benjamin Franklin printed both parts in Philadelphia in 1731 and 1732. Part 3 was first published in 1734, but this is the first appearance of all three parts in one volume. Part 2 comments extensively on Matthew Tindal's Christianity as Old as the Creation (1730). The Spectator was a two or three page paper written by Addison and Steele that was published from 1711-1712 in London, England. Eight bound volumes of The Spectator were published in later runs, each volume containing about 200 daily editions.Boards are rubbed, scuffed and soiled and most of the gilt spine titles and red band backgrounds have faded. Corners are bumped. Volume two's rear board and volume eight's front board have seperated from the spine but have a very clean break and could be reattached with some basic rebinding. Raised spine ribs. Endpapers and title pages show minor browning with age, but all other pages are clean and bright for their age. Indexes at the rear of the texts.
All proceeds benefit The Friends of the San Anselmo Library. No expedited shipping on this set. Extra charges for sending the set will be added to the order after shipping to match the actual cost of mailing.
