About This Item

Washington DC: The Neale Company, 1900. First Edition, only edition. Hardcover. Very good. 16mo; pp; 88, (8) Neale Catalogue; Illustrated with well executed, in some cases scathing, caricatures by Will H. Chandlee; pictorial yellow cloth, lettered in terra-cotta, with a drawing of a regal elephant strumming a lyre in the shape of a $ (Dollar Sign); Spine lettering lightly faded & the boards are lightly soiled, else very good. While well represented in Institutional collections, this piece remains quite scarce in today's market. It does attack TR over San Juan Hill & Negro Troops; There is also another longer negative poem impuning his character. Some of the poems include: "The Wizard and the Pachyderms," "King Dollar," "The Statesman of To-day," "Senator Wolcott," "Ode to Billy Mason," "Chauncey M. Depew," for a total of 37 poems including the explanation: "Good reader, pause and you shall hear/ Of shameless scandal flaunting high, /Fit for a gossip's choices sneer,/Or tear-drops from a patriot's eye." Splendid caricatures of Theodore Roosevelt, Jamie Wilson, Speaker Reed, Elihu Root, Joseph Choate, John Wanamaker, Boss Platt, Lyman P. Gage, Alger, and many others. Philander Chase Johnson (1866-1939) was an American journalist, humorist, poet, lyricist, and dramatic editor. At the time of his death, he had been a Washington Evening Star staff member for 47 years. Prior to joining the Evening Star, he had been an editorial writer for The Washington Post. Famous quotes:"Cheer up, the worst is yet to come."Don't throw a monkey-wrench into the machinery."Politics is the art of turning influence into affluence."
