Paris: Albert Messein, 1926. Book. Fine. Vellum. Inscribed by Author(s). Third Edition. 8vo. Limited to an edition of 108 copies. Original wraps bound in, hand-painted veined vellum binding with hand inked title and small flower decoration to spine, hand-painted green and gold ruled border to front and rear boards, bevelled fore-edge, gilt and multi-toned maroon marbled endpapers; title, author, publisher and decoration to front of original maroon wraps, with acrostic of 'Harry' and 'Caresse' to rear wrapper, followed by original spine on a stub. This edition includes 48 poems, being more complete than previous or later editions. Inscribed in green ink by Crosby on the prelims, 'for Sis / with love / from Harry' followed by a quote from "Peter Quince at the Clavier" by Wallace Stevens: "Beauty is momentary in the mind -- The fitful tracing of a portal; But in the flesh it is immortal. " Probable identity of 'Sis' is Sister Caswell, a friend of Harry's since youth, from the North Shore. Some light foxing to endpapers..

Unpaginated 36pp. Original plain wraps with tan stiff dustjacket with red and black lettering and frames on cover, red vignette and black frame on back cover. Title page printed in red and black. This fourth and last edition contains twenty-four sonnets with red initials printed to Japan paper with limitation page, numbered by hand at rear. The first edition contained 30, the second 37, and the third edition 48 poems. Dustjacket with some wear along edges, small chips and tears along spine and top edge of back cover. Reinforced with transparent tape at lower third of spine, rubbed. Six inch closed tear along top of inside flap of dustjacket, three inch closed tear at top of flap at back cover. Thirty seven poems in this printing, probably intended for a select group of friends for commentary and review, most were evidently inscribed by Crosby, but this copy is not. Bound by Lafon. Backstrip with slight loss head and foot, red leather spine label printed in gilt, marbled endpapers.

Edition limited to 108 copies, this one of 100 on Arches paper; 12mo, pp. [8], 48, [1]; original maroon printed wrappers and contained in a hand-painted veined vellum binding, neatly lettered on spine, and bearing a pencil inscription on a flyleaf "Jo from Caresse Paris 1927." Minkoff A3-c: "Copies were bound again in vellum (cream color with gold web-like patterns). Front and back covers have rectangular ruled borders, one part of which is lavender. Spine is hand-lettered in black..." This third edition contains 48 poems; the two earlier editions contained 30 and 37 respectively, and the fourth edition of the following year only 24.

Helenka was probably Helenka Adamowski Pantaleoni, the Broadway and film actress, intellectual and great beauty who later founded the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and became the president of the U.S. Committee for UNICEF. Adamowski met Harry at Harvard when he was a student after World War I.
