Duckworth, London, 1913. First edition, Roberts' first state, with the cancelled title page. 8vo. 423pp + xx publisher's catalogue at the rear. Navy blue cloth lettered in gold at the spine and upper board with gilt and blind rules. H.J.Massingham's review copy, with his inked ownership signature and date all but erased from the front free endpaper, some occasional pencilled margin notes and underlining, and a review inkstamp to the title page (Massingham's review of the novel appeared in the June 17th 1913 issue of the 'Daily Chronicle', where he called it "Far and away the best book [Lawrence] has yet written"). Cloth a little marked and chafed in places, with a two-inch tear to the head of the rear gutter. A minor slant to the binding, some dust soiling to the top edge, a little light browning to the free endpapers and a touch of minor spotting to several preliminary leaves. A small area of staining mars one text leaf, and the binding is a little tender at the penultimate advertising leaf. Really quite a crisp and bright copy of the author's first masterpiece. With the armorial bookplate of Oliver Brett, later Lord Esher. Roberts A4(1).. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good.

Description:
Eyre & Spottiswoode, London, 1951. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The first UK edition (first printing) of the author's first book. 8vo. 499pp. Beige cloth lettered in red at the spine. Backstrip and upper edges of the boards lightly spotted. Endpapers partially browned and with some additional light spotting which also impacts several preliminary and (blank) concluding leaves. A very good copy in very good non-price-clipped pictorial dust wrapper designed by Stein, with just a touch of spotting and tanning, several tiny closed tears and several slivers of loss from the spine panel ends. First published by Harcourt Brace in the US in March 1950, this distinctly more uncommon UK edition followed a year later. The novel was not a success: it was trashed by a number of reviewers, Kerouac's royalties did not exceed his advance of $1,000 and it was six years before the publication of his next novel, 'On the Road'..

A small smudge to the front free endpaper, and three tiny instances of very light miscellaneous soiling to the fore edge. New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence.
