By the time she arrived in New Haven aboard a slave ship, she had been givern her first name, Pansy. She was sold to a gentle Tory family, the Scroobys, who made her a companion to their wilful daughter, Prudence. Pansy, now formally named Sophia Scrooby, proved quick of wit and eager to learn. She soon surpassed Prudence in accomplishment and in the favour of their unconventional tutor. Then came the Revolutionary War and bankruptcy for the Scroobys. Pansy was wrested from them and sold again to slavers. She fell into the hands of pirates and matched wits with a bayou voodoo queen. What would have been tragedy for any other girl, Pansy turned into a triumph.
