First edition, Vol. VIII in the "History of the South" series. 8vo. xii, (4), 426 pp. Illustrated from old engravings, paintings, line drawings, etc., plates, maps, one double-page. Inscribed by the author on the front endpaper in 1951; historian Bell Wiley's copy, with his ownership signature on the front endpaper. Laid in is a carbon-copy of a 17-page typed essay by Coulter (written about 1953), signed by him at the end and with a number of manuscript corrections, titled "Some Reviewers Reviewed," accompanied by a 1965 typed note signed from Coulter to Wiley forwarding the essay, a lengthy response to critical reviews of the book written by John Hope Franklin and others (charging "deliberately preverting [sic] facts and dealing in biased judgments and interpretations"), never published in full; Emory holds a ribbon-copy of the essay, which ends "Finally I am wondering if it can be true that Professor [Howard K.] Beale and Professor Franklin have really deluded…
