Cloth boards in heavily edge-worn dust-jacket which has taped repairs and some loss at and by the spine head and foot and at the corners. The book includes an account of Discovery's narrow escape from being trapped by pack-ice in the Weddell Sea, the rescue of the American aviator Lincoln Ellsworth at the Bay of Whales, and the stranding of a survey party of six men on King George Island..
