A beautiful presentation copy signed by Wiley to Marshall Rissman. Includes a TLS from Wiley to Rissman on Emory stationary in which Wiley discusses attending Civil War history meetings in Chicago, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis. "This important pioneer work treats of every aspect of Negro life, North and South, during the war; well-researched, carefully documented, and marred only by a Confederate bias."-Nevins I, p. 216. Harwell calls it, "A remarkably fine first book..."-In Tall Cotton 192.
