Description

Louisville: Southern Conference Educational Fund, Inc, 1976. Very Good. Sixty-six separate 4-page issues of this monthly newsletter/newspaper. 42 cm. Issues for 1965-1968 printed on well preserved white paper have a few chips and are not browned. Issues for 1968-1976 were printed on newsprint and are browned to varying but not extreme degrees and have become slightly brittle. Later horizontal fold, probably for mailing or storage. A couple of early issues have a mailing label for the SDS-MSU Chapter in East Lansing. Most other issues have labels or mailing imprints for various individuals in Michigan. Several issues have no label or mailing imprint. The Southern Conference Educational Fund, regarded by many as Far Left, was dedicated to ending racism, poverty and other injustices in the South and to opposing war as an instrument of national policy. The organization was very supportive of SNCC and other Civil Right efforts. Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth was actively involved with this organization for at least part of the period covered by these issue, as were Carl and Anne Braden. The Southern Patriot was generally published monthly 10 times a year excluding August and July -- although the 6th number in both 1973 and 1974 was identified as June-July. No issues were published for October or November of 1974. No more issues were published after December, 1976.
