Synopsis

John D. Casey is an American novelist and translator born in Massachusetts, graduated from Harvard. His novel, Spartina , was awarded the National Book Award in 1989. His story is focused on a man, Dick Pierce, who is obsessed with an unfinished boat called Spartina. His determination to find the funds in order to procure an engine leads him to take a wild risk where he finds himself weathering a storm at sea in order to keep his dream alive. One of Spatina’s driving themes is family tradition, as Pierce is a family man, kind and sensitive. He feels that his grandfather and father failed to maintain this fisherman lifestyle, and left him lacking in wealth and circumstance. An engaging, complex book, Casey spins an elegant story from the waters off the Narragansett Bay.
