About the author


Jim Brown, PhD, is the executive editor of the Georgia Tech Sports Medicine & Performance Newsletter, a columnist for CBS Sportsline, and a member of the Wilson Sporting Goods Advisory Staff. He is also a teacher, coach, and devoted sports enthusiast. As a former coach, Brown has worked with athletes of all ages and has a good grasp of the complex issues involved in developing talented athletes. He understands how coaches, scouts, and sport scientists approach each situation, and he is also sensitive to the emotions and difficulties athletes and parents face in their quest to reach the top tiers of sport.

Dr. Brown has written, coauthored, or edited ten books, two national newsletters, one magazine, and hundreds of articles on sports, sports medicine, health, and education. His work has appeared in such notable publications as Sports Illustrated for Women, Better Homes & Gardens, Washington Post, New York Post, Raising Teens, Ivanhoe Broadcast News, and Health Education.
