About This Item

(Mt. Vernon, NY): (The Golden Eagle Press), n.d [1938]. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine in slightly worn, Very Good chemise. Folio (9-1/4" x 12-1/4") bound in full cream cloth with a gilt decoration on the cover, gilt lettering on the spine, and silk ties. Per the colophon: "This Archetype Edition of Sprig and Turfy is not only the first but unique in the history of the printed book. It is conveniently limited to one hundred and eight copies, each containing original paintings in water color over a key plate in black, printed by S. A. Jacobs...." This is copy #49 of 108 SIGNED by the artist with his initials. Of the 15 plates, 13 are original watercolors by Roesch, an important artist of the book. For some unexplained reason, this quite stunningly illustrated children's story of a boy and his horse is not recognized in the primary reference of livres de peintres THE ARTIST & THE BOOK 1860-1960, although Roesch's later THE SONNETS TO ORPHEUS (1944), also published by The Golden Eagle Press, is listed as "one of the first modern American livres de peintres."
