About This Item

London, 1944. 1 vols. Image 10-3/4 x 13-1/2 inches, handsomely matted and framed to 19 x 22 inches overall. Fine condition. 1 vols. Image 10-3/4 x 13-1/2 inches, handsomely matted and framed to 19 x 22 inches overall. 1944 Watercolor of John Milton's Blitzed Burial Place. A superb rendering of the surviving church tower, surrounded by the wreckage of blitz-torn London's East End. Trier did several such highly skillful studies, on the spot and in pencil, but this is the first watercolor we have seen. A handsome, evocative work.

The church, notes John Betjeman, is now "the only church among the glassy slabs of the Barbican Scheme" and is the final resting place of John Milton who in 1674 was buried near his father in the chancel of the church. The interior of the church, dating from the 15th century, suffered extensive WWII bomb damage and was rebuilt in 1960. Betjeman, Churches of the City of London, p. 16
