1939. 8vo size grey clothbound hardcover with dust jacket; 452 deckle edged pages with some black and white illustrations From jacket: "In order of their importance (the author) draws brilliant portraits of the men in power: Jeff Davis, high strung, imperious, and lonely; the fiery wasp, Vice President Alexander H. Stephens; Judah P. Benjamin, the imperturbable Jew; Toombs, the rambunctious; the colorful diplomats, Yancey, Mason, and Slidell, and host of others. He points up the fantastic, often pathetic, efforts of the Southerners abroad to bring about conspiracy in Mexico and recognition in London and Paris. He shows the grandiose negotiation with Juarez, Napoleon III, and Lord John Russell. He traces, dollar by dollar, the fatal mistakes in the cotton policy, the vice of paper currency, and the steadily increasing destructiveness of the Federal blockade..." Jacket has quite a bit of wear and chipping, endpapers and inside covers are tanned; there are two small spots on the spine seam; edgewear, bumped head and heel of spine. . Cloth.
