In the age of the fast intercity trains and electrified lines it is easy to forget that most of our stations have remained unchanged since the golden age of the steam train.Today many of these stations are lovingly maintained by station staff and dedicated community volunteers, who enhance the platforms and waiting rooms with plants and flowers, and carefully restore the original station features. In this beautifully illustrated volume Bill Pertwee visits the more colourful aspects of our railway heritage and meets the people responsible for its upkeep. His quest began when he noticed some hanging baskets above a small British Rail station in Surrey. The blooms in the baskets had been grown from seed and arranged in the baskets by a lady porter. On remarking how pleasant it was to be greeted at a station by such a colourful array of flowers,he was dismayed to discover that his fellow passenger, who had visited the station twice a day for the previous two weeks, had failed to notice the display.Bill Pertwee has spent the last eighteen months travelling up and down the country, visiting many railway stations, some large, some not so large, country halts and rural preserved lines, from Reading to Attleborough,Dumfries to Dolau, the North York Moors and the Isle of Wight,in search of station buildings with a colourful flavour and pleasing architectural design. He has been greeted with enthusiasm and unfailing commitment to preservation from local community groups,British Rail and the preserved lines and he has discovered some outstanding projects. 'The Station Now Standing' is a record of over sixty stations that Bill Pertwee has discovered, and of the incredible work,a lot of it voluntary, that has been given to the creation of these feasts of colour and splendid examples of renovation.
