About This Item

1889. A Series of New and Original Tales for Boys and Girls from Six to Fourteen Years Old. London: Skeffington & Son, 1889. 3 pp undated ads. Original light green cloth pictorially decorated in green, black and pale yellow.

First Edition. This is an anthology of nineteen "new and original" children's tales, by such authors as R. M. Ballantyne ("A Gallant Rescue"), George Manville Fenn ("How the Starling Caught Cold"), G.A. Henty ("True to her Charge") and Charlotte Yonge ("Neighbour's Fare") -- the majority of them being by women. Dartt says that the preface precedes the title page in Skeffington copies, and follows the title page in Dutton ones -- but in this Skeffington copy (like another light blue copy we have had) the preface follows the title page. This copy is in near-fine condition, with little external wear. Quite a scarce book, much sought by Henty collectors. Newbolt 182.1 ("light-blue"); Dartt pp 125-126.
