About This Item

Don Mills, Ontario: Longman Canada, 1971. 63 pp, 11 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Here is a wealth of fascinating history, going back to the time when Dominion Square was a cemetery outside Montreal. Dr. Collard tells the story of the square's famous buildings, past and present. We visit a political rally when Sir John A. Macdonald was mobbed; we see the Winter Carnival's crowning spectacle, the storming of the Ice Palace. The 'principal presence' in the square is the Sun Life head office, one of the most massive office buildings in the world. For a number of seasons this huge structure served as the nesting place of a pair of falcons, who evidently mistook it for a mountain. And during the war it was the custodian of the securities of the British Government. Its giant carillon, once 'the Voice of Expo', can be heard every day in a twenty-minute concert. In 1966 the southern half of the square was renamed Place du Canada, and bordering it arose the C.P.R.'s modern and beautiful Chateaux Champlain and plaza, joined to the square by a wide pedestrian arch. To read (this) book is to visit the historic heart of Canada's greatest metropolis." Very minor edge wear, small light scuff mark on front panel. Dust jacket has three edge tears archivally taped, light wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good.
