About This Item
New York: Simon and Schuster, (1979). First U.S. edition. A man tells tales "to save his life, and comes finally to take lives to tell tales" (from the dust jacket flap). INSCRIBED BY SILLITOE on publisher's logo page (preceding title page), "Another one out of 'Mimic'-/ and out of my own/ guts and backbone/ - which must have been/ written for 'The Happy Few'/ which I'm delighted to know/ includes Walter Sullivan,/ my friend --/ Alan Sillitoe/ 28-3-85." Walter Sullivan (1924-2006) was an author, critic, longtime Vanderbilt University professor, authority on Southern literature and one of the founding members of The Fellowship of Southern Writers. Most likely inscribed by Sillitoe (1928-2010) while his wife, the distinguished British poet Ruth Fainlight, was Poet in Residence at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Fine in near fine dust jacket with just a few small tears. TOGETHER WITH a copy of the January 1969 issue of the British political and literary journal, Encounter, with the first appearance of "Mimic," the story referenced in Sillitoe's inscription.
