About This Item

HBS 31-32 Catholic Church. The Stowe Missal: MS. D. II. 3 in the Library of the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin. Edited by Sir George F. Warner. Suffolk(Series: Henry Bradshaw Society, Volumes 31-32). ; Wolfeboro, N.H., USA: Boydell Press for the Henry Bradshaw Society, 1989, lviii, 45 pages, illus., facsim. Liturgical text in Latin; editorial matter in English. Two volumes in one. Signature of a previous owner on front lining paper. Fine copy, new really, of the hardcover reprint of a work first published in 1906-1915. Signature of a previous owner on front lining paper. $75.00 (This is not the original publication. God only knows what that would cost).

The Stowe missal is the oldest mass-book of the early Irish church known to have survived. It is so called from the fact that for a few years it was in the library at Stowe house in Buckinghamshire. cf. v. 2, p. [vii]

Liturgical text in Latin; editorial matter in English.

Written probably at Tallaght, Ireland shortly after 792; the work is a "libellus Missarum" rather than a missal or a true sacramentary. Confer: Klaus Gamber, Codices liturgici latini antiquiores.
