About This Item

London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1985. An English Family in America, in India and at home 1570 to 1902. Pp. 192, 16 plates, a few text illustrations, one full page map, full page and endpaper family trees, sources and selected bibliography, index; demy 8vo; blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top fore-corners of boards bruised; dust wrapper, slightly soiled, edges lightly creased; outer leaves and edges lightly foxed; Victor Gollancz Ltd, London, 1985. First edition. *'Few families can boast that Shakespeare purloined details of The Tempest from an ancestor's unpublished manuscript. Its author was a certain William Strachey, one of the very first merchant venturers to set foot in America, and shipwrecked on Bermuda in 1606. William was only one of many Strachey adventurers whose history can be traced back over five centuries .... yet today the Stracheys are chiefly remembered for Lytton and his connection with Bloomsbury' [wrapper blurb].
