Description

New York: Stein and Day, 1970. Second printing, 8vo, pp. 317, [1]; plates, charts, and illustrations throughout; a near fine copy in slightly worn and creased dust jacket. Documented madness. The story of an English sailor who entered the London Sunday-Times singlehanded around the world race, and who, having gotten to the South Atlantic from England, decided he could sail around in circles until the rest of the fleet re-entered the South Atlantic from the Indian Ocean, and thereby rejoin the fleet and sail on to victory. The only problem was that he went mad. His boat and two logs, one fake, the other true, survive him. A classic, chilling account, and one of the great sea stories of all time.
