First line

Willie Colon is a famous, world renowned Puerto Rican Salsa singer from New York City who has maintained a never compromising, radical, oppositional voice for thirty years.

From the rear cover

This book tells the story of how the students navigated their academic life in a predominantly white university to construct their own education. The voices of the students and the teacher, Felix Padilla, are carefully integrated into the text as they discuss the academic and personal challenges that arise from 'being different' and the joy that comes from developing a curriculum that stresses personal and cultural experiences.

About the author

M. Padilla is Professor of Sociology in the Department of Latin American and Puerto Rican Studies at Lehman College, City University of New York. He is the author of several books, including The Gang as an American Enterprise (1992).
