Description

Charlottesville, VA: The University Press of Virginia, 1948. SEE PHOTOS. Consecutive run of 33 volumes, #1 - #33, 1948 - 1980. HARDCOVER. Mixed set consisting of some First Editions and some reissues. Most of the early volumes are from 1964-68 reissue. Some of these reissues are corrected and all are clothbound. Some of the originals were bound in wraps or flimsy paper boards that just don't hold up. Most people prefer the sturdy clothbound hardcover reissues for their superior durabilty, not to mention their revisions and corrections. The set is an important source of bibliographical information. Contained in these volumes are articles that have become standard works of reference, such as W. W. Greg's THE RATIONALE OF COPY-TEXT (Vol. 3), Allan H. Stevenson's WATERMARKS ARE TWINS (Vol. 4), Bruce Harkness's BIBLIOGRAPHY AND THE NOVELISTIC FALLACY (Vol. 12), D. F. McKenzie's PRINTERS OF THE MIND: SOME NOTES ON BIBLIOGRAPHICAL THEORIES AND PRINTING-HOUSE PRACTICES (Vol. 22), E. F. Shield's THE AMERICAN EDITIONS OF [Virginia Woolf's] MRS. DALLOWAY (Vol. 27, SEE PHOTOS), G. Thomas Tanselle's THE EDITORIAL PROBLEM OF FINAL AUTHORIAL INTENTION" (Vol. 29), Tanselle's THE CONCEPT OF IDEAL COPY (Vol. 33), etc. Fine condition. Sharp corners. Hinges are perfect. Square and tight. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT library discards. Pages are clean and crisp -- apparently seldom if ever read. NO underlining. NO highlighting.
