London, David Nutt, 1891. . 'The following studies began in an attempt to get reliable data about the Jews of Europe when the anti-Semitic movement was at its height. In going through the literature of the subject, of which I have published a bibliography ("The Jewish Question, 1875-1885," Trübner), I was struck by the paucity of trustworthy evidence, both among Jews and their opponents. The subject once entered upon, I got interested in it, apart from its polemical bearings, and I collected at the time (1882-3) a mass of materials of all kinds. Some of these I utilized in the following studies, which appeared in the Jewish Chronicle of 1882-5, and in the Journal of the Anthropological Institute from 1885 to 1889. The latter part of the paper on Vital Statistics appears here for the first time. As they were printed, a number of "off-prints" were made of them, and they are now collected together. Fragmentary as they are, these contain a larger quantity of statistical material than is elsewhere available.' (Joseph Jacobs, extract from the Preface).
