Ottawa: A. C. Woodburn, Printer and Publisher, 1885. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. ix, 288 p. 26 cm. 8 chromolithographic plates from drawings by Mrs. Agnes Chamberlin, Susanna Moodie's daughter. B&w frontispiece portrait of the author. Green cloth with gold impression and gilt text block edges. Board edges worn in places, hinges cracked internally, corners and spine ends worn. Gold spine decoration is bright and clear. Owner's pencil inscription on front free endpaper. Tears in front free endpaper, large tear in protective leaf before Plate IV but tissue guard missing. Small tear margin of p. 97. Includes Errata.

Collectors of Canadian Literature and Canadiana will be very familiar with Mrs. Traill, whose contributions to settler literature and nature prose are a prolific part of the Canadian canon.

Toronto: William Briggs, 1906. Revised edition. Cloth. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo. Signed and dated in pencil on the front free endpaper by Mary FitzGibbon, who edited Traill's last book, Cot and Cradle Stories (Briggs, 1895), having provided a biographical sketch for her previous book, Pearls and Pebbles (Briggs, 1894). Bound in green cloth with gilt title and pictorial to front board and spine. Light wear to head and heel and very light wear at some points along edges; plates 10 and 11 missing tissue guards.

Description:
Ottawa: Woodburn, 1885. 1st . Original Cloth. Poor. First printing. 288 pp., frontis port. with tissue guard, chromolithograph plates with tissue guards, small quarto in original green morocco-grain cloth and gilt decorations, aeg. A complete, original copy with all contents, endpapers and binding present. Both hinges are split, with the contents loose within the covers. However, the binding is in excellent, unfaded condition with only minor wear to tips. Certainly a worthy candidate for repair. "C. W. Spencer with compliments of Publisher" inscribed on the front blank leaf in attractive 19th century calligraphic hand. The inscribeed may have been C. W. Spencer Manager of the Eastern Division of the CPR.

Variant green cloth with gilt stamped front board and spine, board edges bevelled, all edges gilt, expert cloth repair to head and heel of spine. Coated endpapers, hinges repaired. A few ink names to preliminary blank, with paper repair at bottom of that page. Text clean and the binding tight. Overall a very good copy.
