[ Paris]: Editions Analeph, 1981. [2] leaves letterpress, plus four mounted silver prints (image size 17 x 11 cm plus borders). Quarto. Laid into folding cloth portfolio. Portfolio somewhat worn at corners, signs of past display on versos of matboards, at some point the original mounting tabs were somewhat carelessly re-affixed to the boards (not affecting the images), one print has a minute spot at the edge of the blank border, but very good, the photographs otherwise fine. First edition. One of fifty numbered copies, signed by the photographer on the justification, and with each print numbered and dated on the verso by him. Four classic Paris and Rome images from the late fifties and early sixties, when Horvat was associated with Magnum and revolutionizing fashion photography, including "Le Chien qui Fume."

Description:
[Np: The Photographer, ca. 1963].. Two original glossy double-weight gelatin silver prints from negatives, 11 x 14" (inclusive of margins). Captioned in pencil on verso. About fine. Original prints of two of the most memorable of the sequence of superb photographs taken by Yousuf Karsh on location in South Africa during the filming of the 1964 Diamond Films production, ZULU, directed by Cy Endfield. Karsh's invitation to join the production and photograph the cast and locale resulted in a sequence of photographs of a very high order. The present images are an extraordinary pair of photographs, one from a near face-on p.o.v., the other from right profile, of a large group of Zulu tribesmen, in warrior regalia, seated and watching a motion picture (in the first of the images the 16mm projector is visible in the background). The expressions of wonder and amusement are matchless. The pencil caption on the verso reads of the first reads: "The Zulus watched a western movie at dusk outdoors in the… Read More

Description:
Against a stark horizon in a harsh climate, settlers in Nebraska everywhere erected monuments to their optimism. The buildings pictured in Dreams in Dry Places are not just famous landmarks like the State Capitol but also humble farmhouses, barns, grain elevators, courthouses, banks, churches, stores, and theaters. They represent every kind of architecture to be found in Nebraska--folk, high-style, commercial, residential, pioneer, and modern; the unexpected and the familiar, the poetic and the prosaic, good and bad. Caught by Roger Bruhn's camera, these structures always suggest the spiritual resources of their builders and inhabitants, who struggled for a livelihood on the Great Plains.Dreams in Dry Places has an architecture of its own, beginning and ending with images of the natural landscape and in between revealing unexpected continuities among disparate structures and settings, juxtapositions of forms, and the vanities and vagaries of architectural style. Exterior and interior shots are… Read More
