The creation of this hundred-mile-long 'ditch' was one of the most significant political and engineering achievements of the19th century. This is the story of that construction and the political turmoil and impact at the time, de Lesseps' role, British opposition, financing, construction, people toll, the opening. the war years. The engravings throughout the book are mainly the work of Edouard Riou (1838-1900), famous in his day for his work in French illustrated papers and as illustrator of the writings of Jules Verne. Fifty-five illustrations, Chronological table, Index. Frontis: Map of the Canal, 1869. Binding of olive-green cloth w/gilt titles, clean with darker discoloration along fore edge, upper corners gently bumped, sewn binding tight and solid. Pages very clean, no marks. Clean wrap-around illustrated jacket, not price-clipped, chipped at some corners, spine head and heel chipped, wrinkled. Very interesting book. 242 pages. 5.25 x 8.25 inches. 1969, Readers Union/J.M.
