Bound in full brown crushed morocco, spine with raised bands, oval portrait of Ninon de Lenclos at the height of her beauty inset under glass in front cover, spine and both covers beautifully tooled with stylized Art Nouveau flower designs (probably fuschias); gilt-tooled inner dentelles with floral designs at corners, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. A vibrant, fine copy aside from several surface scratches and small spots of wear; front cover a bit sunned. Housed in binder's velvet-lined green cloth clamshell box. Contemporary full blue polished calf. Spines with five raised bands, each with gilt decorative roll. The compartments are ruled, lettered and fully decorated in gilt. Red and green labels, gilt. Double gilt ruled border on boards. Board edges with decorative floral gilt roll. Inner gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Housed in a blue paper coveredslip case which has some minor wear but has done its job of keeping the books protected. The slip case is felt lined and has a beige silk tie pull. The spines are just a touch faded and there are a couple of small scratches but overall this is an attractive and finely bound set of this important collection.

Beautifully bound in full brown 19th-century polished calf, spine with raised bands , contrasting red and black morocco labels (two red, one black), and elaborate gilt floral and geometric tooling, covers bordered with three gilt rules, with rosettes at corners, surrounding center panels in bluind composed of rules and repeating floral motifs with floral devices at corners, gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers (minor wear; very slight dampstaining to small areas of cover; upper corner of page 125/5 restored with a single character in the page number supplied; some marginal evidence of dampstaining and smudges). Withal, an exceptionally attractive copy. In this state of the title page, line 9 ends 'unto E-'. Attribution of this work has been disputed for centuries. The 9 originals volumes have been bound in 18 by the Riverside Press bindery (stamped at front). The bindings are a rich, vibrant red 3/4 morocco over marbled boards, the spines have raised bands and elegant gilt tiling, the top edges are gilt, and the endpapers are marbled, other edges are uncut. This is a fine, crisp set with only the slightest hints of wear. The set is illustrated with photogravures and steel engravings, and each of the 9 original volumes (Parts I of each of these paired volumes), have hand-colored frontispieces (9 in all). This is copy #174 of 750 numbered sets, printed on heavy handmade paper. This set has outstanding shelf presence.
