Description

New York City, NY: Henry Holt And Company, 2010. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Henry Holt And Company, 2010. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 310 pages. The author's sixteenth novel. One of Paul Auster's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Paul Auster's "Sunset Park". His second Brooklyn novel. Beautifully written in a more realistic vein, and in a departure from his post-modernist, "Paul Austere" style. "Auster is in excellent form for this foray into the tarnished, conflicted soul of Brooklyn. The fractured narrative takes in an impressive swath of life and history: Vietnam, baseball trivia, the WWII coming-home film 'The Best Years of Our Lives'. It's a gratifying departure from the postmodern trickery he's known for, one full of crisp turns of phrase and keen insights" (Publishers Weekly). Auster's "New York Trilogy" (1985) established his global reputation, even though, like Philip Roth, he was originally from Newark, New Jersey, and had a somewhat tangential, even "conceptual" relationship with NYC. His Brooklyn novels, "The Brooklyn Follies" and "Sunset Park" (2010), are worthy of being classed alongside "The New York Trilogy". A long-time smoker who later gave it up, Paul Auster died prematurely at age 77 on April 30, 2024 of lung cancer. An absolute "must-have" title for Paul Auster collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed and placed in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "Paul Auster, Brooklyn". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The novel is set in Brookyn, which is also Paul Auster's home, making this signed copy quite special indeed. It also comes with a fine copy of the Souvenir Announcement Material of the book launch/signing event in neighboring NYC during which his signature was obtained. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and placed copy (with Souvenir Material) of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have very serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare, one-of-a-kind signed copy thus. One of the iconic writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER PAUL AUSTER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0805092862.
