The book is the second edition with the date 1899 on the Title Page and 1898 on the copyright page. Tight binding Unmarked text Bluish gray boards with dark blue spine and corners. Contains the poem Battle-Hymn Of The Republic

Please inspect photos. For your consideration a signed letter from Julia Ward Howe to the editor of National Magazine. It is in poor to fair condition long ago repaired with tape, the acids in which are causing the paper to brown.

In comparison to other know signatures of Julia Ward Howe, along with the mention of her daughter Maud (a respected author in her own right, along with that of Maud's sister, Laura E. Richards) I believe this to be the authentic signature of the author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic".To the best of my ability, this is how, line for line, the letter reads:

Editor National Magazine

Dear Sir,

Inside herewith

inclosed a "obit" written

by my daughter, Mrs Maude Howe Elliott, in view of

the late controversy aroused

by Mr. Matterson's diatribe

regarding the "Smart Wit".

The short article appears

to me opportune at this

moment. I ask from

you its favorable consid-

eration.

Your's Truly,

Julia Ward Howe

Ps I am much obliged for

your kindness with regards

to Miss Maken of ?

Description:
Philadelphia: Office of the Indian Rights Association, 1888. Softcover in fair condition. Yellow covers, 114 pages, 22 cm tall, octavo, index. The author, an agent of the Indian Rights Association, wrote this report about his 1887 trip to mission Indians of southern California and to the tribes in the western portion of the Indian Territory(Oklahoma). As requested by President Cleveland and the Secretary of the Interior, Painter included in his report the condition of Indian schools at his several stops. Also as requested, Painter wrote about the advisability of removing some of the tribes in Indian Territory to open their lands to white settlement: "unjust, cruel, disastrous." (page 12) The 1888 publication of this report was soon followed by the first Oklahoma land run in 1889. Fragile front and rear covers are 3/4 detached from the spine. Three small tape mends to the spine reinforce the covers. Light soil to the covers. Internally very good.

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire… Read More
