Charles Steinman Foltz Jr., reported from abroad for the Associated Press during World War II and later was foreign editor of U.S. News & World Report. After graduating in 1931 from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Mr. Foltz spent a year as a reporter for the Record newspaper in Philadelphia and then two years at the Herald Tribune in New York. From 1942 to 1946, Foltz headed AP's bureau in Madrid, giving him grist for his book, "The Masquerade in Spain" (1948), an account of the history of the regime of Gen. Francisco Franco. HC 1st edition. Warmly inscribed by the author on the front flyleaf to Dr William Wolf, who acted a liaison for visiting speakers at the Lancaster Travel Club. Presumably inscribed on the occasion of such a lecture. Ribbed blue cloth with gilt titles bright to cover and spine; light rubbing and trace fray at spine ends. Mild toning to cloth at spine and a tiny drip spot bottom edge of the cover board. Small clipped newsprint portrait of the author mounted to a front endpage with offset toning to the facing page. A clipped news review had been laid in mid-book with offset burn/toning to the facing pages. Illustrated with b&w reproductions on glossy stock. Tight clean copy. VG+; Signed by Author .

Below the authorial inscription is a several line prior ownership inscription of the subsequent owner, explaining the association of Foltz and Brucker as bridge partners in a game that had succeeded their passing and was still being played as of 1986. This copy was clearly a much loved family volume and has been attended to with some professional restorations by the most recent owner, the grandson of Brucker.
